Yaba, Lagos – A student of Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) was gunned down on Tuesday in a suspected cult-related attack near the institution’s back gate, moments after finishing his exams. The tragic incident has ignited fresh anxieties over the escalating wave of cult violence plaguing Lagos State.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the unidentified victim was approached by a group of young men who opened fire, hitting him twice at close range before fleeing the scene. The student was left in a pool of blood.
The Lagos State Police Command swiftly responded to the incident, confirming the arrest of seven individuals in connection with the killing.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the shooting is believed to be the result of a rivalry between cult groups.
“On Tuesday at about 3 pm, a distress call was received at Sabo Division reporting the fatal shooting of a suspected cultist by a group of alleged rival cult members in the Yaba area,” CSP Hundeyin stated.
He added that responding officers found the deceased with visible bullet wounds, and recovered four rounds of live ammunition along with charms from his person. The body has been moved to the morgue for autopsy.
This latest act of violence follows a disturbing pattern of cult-related incidents across Lagos.
On Monday, a 16-year-old boy, identified as Mustapha, was killed by a stray bullet during a suspected cult clash in Oyingbo, Ebute Metta.
Furthermore, on Sunday morning, residents of Idimu were confronted with the gruesome discovery of two bodies along Oladun Road, one of which had been decapitated, in an attack believed to have occurred late Saturday night.
Police have stated that investigations into all three incidents are currently underway as authorities grapple with the increasing challenge of cult violence in the state.
The killing of the Yabatech student, occurring in close proximity to an educational institution, underscores the pervasive nature of this issue and the urgent need for effective measures to curb its spread.
