With a strong candidate from the North, Tinubu won’t be an issue : Dele Momodu

Dele Momodu emphasizes the need for the PDP or any opposition coalition to field a strong Northern candidate to stand a chance against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Prominent media mogul and former presidential candidate, Dele Momodu, has urged the opposition—particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—to consider fielding a formidable Northern candidate if they hope to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Wednesday, April 30, Momodu delivered a scathing critique of Nigeria’s political landscape. He lamented the growing absence of ideological engagement and the dominance of opportunism over principle in contemporary Nigerian politics.

“Nigerian politics is like an optical illusion—much like magic, the more you look, the less you see,” Momodu said, expressing concern that many politicians today are driven by personal ambition, rather than public service.

He stressed that the North remains a decisive force in Nigerian presidential elections, citing widespread discontent in the region under Tinubu’s leadership. According to him, perceived favoritism toward the South has left many Northern stakeholders feeling marginalized, a sentiment that could be harnessed by the opposition—if properly strategized.

“I believe Tinubu can only be effectively countered by another strong candidate from the North,” he stated.

“Any Southerner who thinks they can challenge Tinubu is likely wasting their time. The PDP—or any coalition—must understand power dynamics and respond with strategic thinking.”

Internal Division in the PDP

Momodu also touched on the internal rifts within the PDP, revealing that the party is increasingly divided between those advocating for a broader coalition and those committed to preserving the party’s traditional structure.

“Half of our members are involved in coalition talks, while the other half remain loyal to the party. This creates confusion,” he said.

“I recently spoke with the Bauchi State Governor who believes we shouldn’t abandon the PDP but work to strengthen and grow it.”

However, Momodu cautioned that if the PDP refuses to reform and evolve, its relevance in future elections may be at risk.

“If the PDP resists change and chooses to remain stagnant, what options remain? A collapse of the party might need to be considered.”

As Nigeria’s political gears begin to shift toward 2027, Momodu’s statements highlight the need for strategic alliances, regional inclusion, and ideological clarity in the quest to build a credible opposition to the current administrations.
