What commuters need to know about Ijora bridge closure

Ijora bridge to be closed for 60 day during repair, commuter to find alternative route

Lagos commuters, take note: the Federal Government has announced a complete closure of the Ijora Bridge starting April 27, 2025, to begin a critical phase of structural repairs aimed at ensuring long-term safety.

According to the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the bridge will undergo essential structural repairs to replace worn-out bearings beneath the deck — components that support the bridge and absorb vibrations caused by traffic.

This phase will involve lifting the entire bridge deck to replace nearly 50 damaged bearings. Though the structure is not in immediate danger, the repairs are necessary to prevent long-term damage,” Kesha stated during a press briefing and site inspection.

The Ijora Bridge is a major transportation artery that connects the Ijora Causeway with the Apapa port axis — a hub for commercial and cargo activities. With the closure set to begin on Saturday, April 27, road users should expect significant traffic disruptions, especially during peak hours.

To ease congestion, the Federal Ministry of Works has implemented traffic management plans, including diversion routes and signage to guide motorists.

The bearings underneath the bridge deck have deteriorated over time, causing increased vibrations and raising serious safety concerns. This final phase of rehabilitation is part of a multi-year maintenance project — the first major overhaul since the bridge was constructed.

We understand the inconvenience this will cause, but this repair is absolutely necessary to protect lives and infrastructure,” Kesha emphasized.
