The Western Region, particularly Takoradi and Tarkwa, is currently in a dangerous state a situation that appears to have been neglected by both citizens and leadership, especially in matters concerning health and sanitation.
In 2024, the region suffered a severe cholera outbreak, which sadly claimed the lives of many innocent souls. Shockingly, in 2025, we are already battling another health crisis Mpox (Monkeypox) which is spreading rapidly across the region.

This recurring problem is deeply rooted in poor sanitation and a lack of proper hygiene practices. Despite being Ghana’s oil hub, the Western Region has a troubling record when it comes to cleanliness and environmental management. It is alarming that, in the 21st century, public toilets remain the primary means of sanitation in most communities. Many homes lack basic toilet facilities, forcing entire neighborhoods to depend on overburdened and poorly maintained public ones.
Open gutters filled with filth, uncollected refuse, and unhygienic food vending sites only worsen the situation. These conditions are a direct threat to public health, and yet, many residents have sadly become accustomed to living in such an environment normalizing what is truly a crisis.
This is not just a regional issue; it is a national concern. If left unchecked, the health risks in the Western Region could spill over and affect the broader health and safety of the nation.
We therefore call on the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, and the Western Regional Minister to take immediate action. There must be stricter enforcement of sanitation laws, improved waste management systems, and a comprehensive public health campaign to educate and mobilize citizens.
The lives of the people matter. The future of the Western Region depends on urgent intervention.
