Awka, Anambra State – A promising 100-level law student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has tragically lost her life after being denied access to her hostel room at Elmadada hostel for three days, leading to her inability to retrieve crucial diabetic medication. The incident has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about hostel management policies and compassionate care within the university environment.
The student, who was reportedly insulin-dependent and suffered from chronic diabetes, misplaced her room key. According to multiple accounts circulating online, Elmadada hostel has a policy requiring payment for a replacement key, even when a spare is available. Despite her desperate pleas and explanation of her critical medical condition, hostel management allegedly refused her access to a spare key and, consequently, to her room and life-saving drugs.

Sources indicate that the student was forced to endure the harsh conditions outside her room for a grueling 72 hours. During this period, the lack of access to her prescribed insulin, coupled with the immense physical and emotional stress of being locked out, severely exacerbated her diabetic condition. She eventually collapsed and was rushed to the hospital in a critical state of hypoglycemic shock.

Tragically, a few days later, the young law student passed away. Her untimely death has ignited widespread condemnation of the hostel’s rigid policies and the perceived lack of empathy shown by the management. Many are questioning how a student with a known chronic illness could be denied access to essential medication under such circumstances.
This devastating incident highlights the urgent need for a review of hostel management policies across Nigerian universities, particularly concerning emergency situations and the welfare of students with pre-existing medical conditions. Calls are mounting for more compassionate and practical solutions to common issues like misplaced keys, ensuring that student well-being and access to life-saving care are prioritized above all else.
The university administration is yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. However, students and concerned citizens are demanding a thorough investigation and accountability for the tragic loss of a young, promising life.
