President Tinubu backs Pope Leo XIV's Call for Peace Amidst Benue Massacre

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a resolute statement condemning the escalating violence in Benue State, declaring “Enough is enough!” and directing security agencies to act decisively. This strong directive comes in the wake of recent horrific massacres in the region, which have also drawn a powerful condemnation from the newly elected Head of the Catholic Church, His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV.

The President’s statement, released from the State House, Abuja, aligns with the global outcry for peace and justice in Benue.

Just yesterday, Pope Leo XIV, during his Sunday Angelus in Rome, expressed profound sorrow and called the Benue killings a “terrible massacre,” particularly highlighting the plight of “rural Christian communities” who have been “relentless victims of violence.” The Pontiff emphasized the need for “security, justice, and peace” in Nigeria.

President Tinubu’s full statement underscores the gravity of the situation:
“I have been briefed on the senseless bloodletting in Benue State. Enough is enough! I have directed the security agencies to act decisively, arrest perpetrators of these evil acts on all sides of the conflict, and prosecute them. Political and community leaders in Benue State must act responsibly and avoid inflammatory utterances that could further increase tensions and killings. This is the time for Governor Alia to act as a statesman and immediately lead the process of dialogue and reconciliation that will bring peace to Benue. Our people must live in peace, and it is possible when leaders across the divides work together in harmony and differences are identified and addressed with fairness, openness and justice. ~ PBAT”
