Tinubu Acknowledges Hardship, Pledges Increased Support Amid Labor Demands

Abuja, Nigeria – – President Bola Tinubu has publicly acknowledged the severe economic hardships facing Nigerians, including rising living costs, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and widespread loss of livelihoods. Speaking at the national May Day celebration in Abuja, the President pledged increased support and committed his administration to addressing these critical challenges.

 

The President’s address, delivered by Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, came in response to a 20-point demand from Organised Labour, which called for urgent government action to tackle the deepening socio-economic crisis.

“The theme of this yearโ€™s celebration calls for collective reflection,” President Tinubu stated. “We must create a society where every worker feels safe, respected, and empowered to contribute to national development. My administration is committed to building that environment.”

He emphasized that while economic hardship is a global issue, its impact on Nigerians has been particularly severe. The President assured workers that his administration is actively implementing policies focused on job creation, poverty reduction, economic growth, and support for vulnerable groups.

Beyond economic reforms, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of revitalizing civic space, emphasizing open dialogue, transparency, and inclusivity in a functioning democracy. He affirmed workersโ€™ rights to organize, advocate, and participate in governance, while pledging to strengthen labor protections, improve job security, and combat underemployment.

 

He also addressed the evolving nature of the workplace, noting the need to address challenges such as technological disruption, environmental risks, changing work patterns, and mental health concerns.
In a move to align Nigeriaโ€™s labor system with international standards, President Tinubu announced the countryโ€™s readiness to join the International Labour Organizationโ€™s Global Coalition for Social Justice. This coalition prioritizes employment creation, social protection, enterprise sustainability, human dignity, inequality reduction, and skills developmentโ€”all aligned with his administrationโ€™s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“This administration is committed to improving the lives of everyday Nigerians, fighting corruption that enriches a few at the expense of many, and ensuring fairness and opportunity for all,” President Tinubu stated.

 

Minister Dingyadi, represented by Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, echoed the President’s sentiments, emphasizing that the administration recognizes the economic hardships faced by citizens and is committed to addressing them through dialogue and an open civic space.
