The Expat Doctor’s Diagnosis: A Tale of Two Healthcare Systems

This afternoon, I was chatting with my British colleague, a seasoned 56-year-old. I mentioned that our former president had passed away last weekend right here in the UK.

“Wow,” he said, a look of surprise crossing his face. “Was he on exile here?”
“No,” I replied, “he was sick.”

He then pondered, “So why didn’t he go back home to get good treatment?”
I explained, “He actually came here to get better treatment.”

He leaned in slightly, a wry smile forming. “That means you only have better colleges than us; you don’t have good hospitals.”

 

His quick deduction caught me off guard. “How did you know we have good colleges but not good hospitals?”
