Okay, so picture this: my very first time staying in a fancy, expensive hotel. You know the kind – plush carpets, a pristine bathroom, and a key card for my room. My friend was with me, in his own equally swanky room next door.
The evening started great. We went out for a lovely dinner, soaking in the good vibes. When we got back, we both headed to our respective rooms, ready to chill. I opened my door, stepped inside, and… darkness. Absolute, pitch-black darkness.
Furious, doesn’t even begin to cover it. I’d just paid a small fortune for this room! How could there be no power? I waited. And waited. Hours felt like an eternity in that dark room, hoping the lights would magically flicker on. Eventually, frustration won, and I called my friend.

“Dude, do you have light in your room?” I grumbled, already anticipating his shared outrage.
“Yeah, I do!” he replied, and then I heard it – a distinct chuckle on the other end of the line.
That laugh. Oh, that laugh just made me even angrier. I curtly ended the call.

A few minutes later, there was a knock on my door. It was him. He walked in, went straight to the wall by the door, picked up my key card, and with a flourish, slotted it into the holder.
BOOM. Light flooded the room.
And that’s when the real comedy began. My friend burst out laughing. Not just a polite chuckle, mind you. He was cackling, holding his stomach, practically rolling on the floor with laughter! 😅😅
What was my great sin, you ask? My unforgivable crime? I, in my infinite wisdom, had absolutely no idea you were supposed to place the key card in the holder to activate the power! 😆
Growing up, my experience with lights was simple: a good old-fashioned wall switch. You flick it up, lights on. You flick it down, lights off. Which one is “insert card for power”?!
Hotels, I tell you, will absolutely humble you.
We truly do learn something new every single day, don’t we? 😆
