Salaga, Savannah Region, Ghana – Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, Member of Parliament for Salaga-South Constituency, has fully sponsored the international travel of Miss Hadijatu Ekunatu Gyeta Basiru, a beneficiary of the Yagbon Wura Bii Kunuto Jewu Soale I Scholarship Programme, to pursue Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in China. The MP covered a GHC 13,000 flight ticket and provided an additional $300 (GHC 4,800) for initial upkeep — a total investment of over GHC 17,800.
The presentation took place on October 24, 2025, at a brief ceremony in Salaga, where Mr. Hamid Kanyiti Salifu and Mr. Saaka Sulemana, acting on behalf of the MP, handed over the ticket and cash to the elated student.
“Be a Proud Ambassador” – MP’s Charge to Future Doctor
Speaking at the event, Mr. Hamid Kanyiti delivered a powerful message from Hon. Hajia Zuwera:
Taste the Goodness: EL Blends All-Natural Cold-Pressed Juices
“Consider yourself a good ambassador not just for your fellow scholarship beneficiaries, but for the entire Salaga-South Constituency. Take your studies seriously in China. Return as a qualified medical doctor to serve our people and transform healthcare in the Savannah Region.”
He urged Miss Basiru to uphold discipline, cultural values, and academic excellence while abroad, emphasizing that her success would inspire hundreds of girls in rural Gonjaland.
From Salaga to Shanghai: A Journey of Hope
Miss Hadijatu Ekunatu Gyeta Basiru, 19, from Lor Ekun, secured admission to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine — one of China’s top institutions — after excelling in the Yagbon Wura Scholarship selection process. The fully funded program covers:
– Tuition
– Accommodation
– Health insurance
– Annual stipend
However, international travel costs remained a barrier — until the MP intervened.
She departs Accra for Shanghai via Dubai on October 28, 2025, beginning a 6-year MBBS program taught in English.
Family Overwhelmed with Gratitude
On behalf of the Basiru family, Mr. Mohammed Awal Seidu expressed profound thanks:
“We are speechless. This is more than financial support — it’s a lifeline for our daughter’s dream. We thank Hon. Hajia Zuwera for her generosity and continued investment in our children’s future. May Allah bless her abundantly.”
He also appreciated the MP’s representatives for their warmth and coordination.
Hon. Hajia Zuwera: Champion of Girl-Child Education
This act aligns with the MP’s “Educate a Girl, Empower a Nation” initiative, which has:
– Sponsored 42 students to senior high schools since 2021.
– Facilitated 8 international scholarships (China, Türkiye, Cuba).
– Built 3 ICT libraries in constituency schools.
In a statement, Hon. Hajia Zuwera said:
“Hadijatu is not just going to study medicine — she is going to break barriers. When she returns as Dr. Basiru, she will treat our mothers, save our children, and show that Salaga-South produces excellence.”
Yagbon Wura Scholarship: Royal Support for Education
The Yagbon Wura Bii Kunuto Jewu Soale I Scholarship, established in 2018 by the Overlord of Gonja, selects top BECE performers from deprived communities. This year:
– 12 students awarded (8 SHS, 4 tertiary).
– 3 medical placements abroad.
Community Reactions
- Nana Kwame Adu II, Chief of Lor Ekun: “For the first time, a girl from our village is flying to become a doctor. This is history.”
- Madam Azara Mahama, Market Women Leader: “Hajia Zuwera is raising doctors, engineers, and leaders. We are proud!”
Why This Matters
With only 1 doctor per 12,000 people in Savannah Region (GHS 2025), homegrown medical talent is critical. Miss Basiru’s journey addresses:
– Brain drain reversal through returnee commitments.
– Gender parity in STEM (only 18% of Ghanaian medical students are from rural areas).
– Youth inspiration — over 200 girls applied for next year’s scholarship.
Thanks to Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah’s GHC 17,800+ intervention, Miss Hadijatu Ekunatu Gyeta Basiru is set to soar from Salaga to Shanghai — and one day return as Dr. Basiru, healing her homeland.
As the community chants “Zuwera Paa!”, this is more than sponsorship — it’s nation-building, one flight at a time.
