It’s truism that a man who wakes up one day and decides to travel without having a destination in mind, will join any bus on the road. This is where thoughtful leadership comes in. Leadership they say is the foundation of any modern society. Little wonder the histories of modern day societies like Singapore cannot be written without the mention of the mercurial Lee Kwan Yew who transformed the now sought after nation from a third world country to a nation of infinite possibilities today. That is the immense possibilities of leadership and that’s what Orlu zone needs now. In equal vein, a poor leader with no foresight would equally have debilitating effects on constituency, bringing to fore the need for a thorough scrutiny of our leadership recruitment process, laying more emphasis on competence based assessments as opposed to incendiary and irrelevant considerations on grounds of familial, religious, tribal, communal or kindred ties. No advanced society or community ever developed thinking in like manner.

We have watched with sadness how the Orlu zone has continued to plummet down in security, infrastructural, educational and development ranking. This has a direct link to leadership deficit currently experienced by the Orlu zone and this is where the person, experience & political curriculum Vitae of Rt. Hon. Dr. Jones Onyereri (Mmiri Na Anwu) comes in handy.

 

The Igbos believe that a good market ware sells itself. Rt. Hon. Dr. Sir Jones Chukwudi Victor Onyereri, the 2023 Imo State PDP candidate for Imo West Senatorial District is a household name in Orlu and Imo State that sells itself as an unrivalled good market. As 2027 approaches and with a growing need for effective representation of the sub-nationals at the centre with increasing competing interests, Rt. Hon. Dr. Jones Onyereri stands as tall as the Iroko tree as a voice reverberating over and above every other, with the capacity to command attention of the red chambers, attract needed development to Orlu Zone, just as he did for the NINN Federal Constituency whilst at the green chamber. His achievements and track record are there for all to see and certainly sets him apart from his contemporaries, antagonizers and possible contenders, some of which include the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Owerre Nkworji Umudi Road, erosion control in different communities in NINN, delineation of division of new electoral constituencies in NINN Federal Constituency, establishment of some of the best ICT centers in the NINN Federal Constituency, built the best secondary school in NINN and many more.

 

One would recall with applause his tenure at the Green chamber, where he did not just occupy space but commandeered attention and clout to sit as Chairman of one of the most key legislative committees being the Committee on Banking, utilizing the position to attract benefits for his immediate constituency – NINN, extending it to the entire Orlu Zone and Imo state at large.

 

Also, legislation and lawmaking being the primary function of a lawmaker, Rt. Hon. Dr. Jones Onyereri did not disappoint as one would recall his efforts at calling for the implementation of the fiscal responsibility Act 2017 and fixing debt ceiling for the federation. Also, as a people oriented leader, at the height of exploitative pricing by Multimedia practitioners in Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Dr. Jones Onyereri called for the urgent need to investigate the license status of Gotv in the provisions of terrestrial television services in Nigeria, amongst other laudable legislative interventions he undertook. This achievements are without doubt, people oriented and not for personal gratification.

 

The Igbos also believe that a man whose house is on fire do not leave it to start chasing rats. As discussions around the 2027 elections continue to gain traction, one thing is certain, for a more equitably represented Orlu zone, Imo State and South East, Rt. Hon. Dr. Jones Onyereri must be the Conversation, not just in the conversation. He is without equivocation, the Knight in shining armor to save the burning Orlu zone.

 

With his track record and experience, it is obvious to the blind and audible to the deaf that Rt. Hon. Sir. Dr. Jones Chukwudi Onyereri is the round peg in the round hole for Orlu Zone in the Red Chambers.
