Principal, two others arrested for torturing 14-year-old with hot iron

The Rivers State Police Command has detained the principal of Christ Ambassadors Mission International in Eagle Island, Port Harcourt, Mrs. Mirabel Wobo, and a teacher for allegedly using a hot iron to torture a 14-year-old student who was accused of stealing N30,000.

The aunt of the teen who reported her to the principal was also taken into custody by the police, while the young girl is currently undergoing medical treatment for the burns she sustained.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrests on Friday, June 27, 2025, and stated that investigations are still being conducted to make sure that those who are responsible bear the full consequences of the law.

“Upon questioning, the girl said the school principal and a teacher burned her with a pressing iron after her aunt alleged that she stole N30,000, an accusation the teenager denied,โ€ she said.

Eyewitnesses said they confronted the aunt when she was seen leaving the school premises and subsequently reported the incident to the local police division.

A human rights advocate, Prince Wiro, who is the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, condemned the act, describing it as โ€œmanโ€™s inhumanity to man.โ€

Wiro said that after receiving a distress call, he hurried to the location where an irate mob had assembled and threatened to attack the girl’s aunt.

“When I arrived, the police were already at the scene. I pleaded with the crowd to let the police handle the case. At the station, the girl confirmed that the school principal and a teacher burned her with a hot pressing iron, demanding that she confess to stealing,โ€ Wiro said.

He called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone found culpable.
