President Mahama Suspends Chief Justice Torkornoo Amid Corruption Probe

In a historic shake-up of Ghana’s judiciary, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo with immediate effect, citing serious allegations that have sparked a nationwide conversation on judicial accountability and the rule of law. This marks the first time in Ghana’s history that a sitting Chief Justice faces suspension under constitutional procedures.

The dramatic move follows three separate petitions filed against Torkornoo, triggering an official investigation. A statement from the presidency revealed that, after consultations with the Council of State, a prima facie case had been established, warranting her suspension and the formation of an independent investigative panel.

The allegations, though not fully disclosed, reportedly involve tampering with court records and misappropriation of public funds. The five-member committee—led by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang and including renowned anti-corruption advocate and former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo—will oversee the inquiry.

Chief Justice Torkornoo, appointed in June 2023 by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, is Ghana’s third female chief justice. She previously survived a similar removal petition, dismissed by Akufo-Addo due to insufficient evidence.

President Mahama, who took office in January 2025, has made it clear that his administration is committed to restoring trust in public institutions. “This administration will not shield any public official found culpable of wrongdoing. The rule of law must prevail,” said presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
