ACCRA, Ghana – The Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Osu branch, recently held a special ceremony to unveil a plaque in honor of Nii Noi Dowuona, a pivotal indigenous agent of the Basel Mission in Ghana. The event celebrated Dowuona’s significant contributions to the spread of Christianity in the region and underscored the vital role of African Christians in the church’s early development.
The plaque, unveiled by Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, serves as a lasting tribute to Dowuona’s enduring legacy. During the ceremony, Rev. Dr. Kwakye emphasized the historical importance of acknowledging and celebrating the efforts of indigenous missionaries.

“Today, we gather to celebrate the life and legacy of Nii Noi Dowuona, a pioneering indigenous agent of the Basel Mission in Ghana,” stated Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye. “His contributions to the church are a testament to the significant role African Christians played in spreading Christianity in Ghana. We honor his memory and acknowledge the impact of his work on our church’s growth and development.”

Dowuona, alongside others, played an instrumental role in establishing and nurturing the nascent Christian communities in Ghana.
Representing the Dowuona family, Samuel Okwei Dowuona expressed profound gratitude for the church’s initiative. “On behalf of the Dowuona family, I express our heartfelt gratitude to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Osu branch, Accra, for organizing this important celebration in honor of Nii Noi Dowuona,” he remarked.
“It’s a privilege to see his legacy recognized and celebrated, and we’re grateful for the church’s efforts in keeping his memory alive.”
