Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria – A momentous occasion unfolded at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport (SMICA) in Owerri as the Federal Government’s 2025 Hajj Operation was officially flagged off.
The event marked a historic milestone, with SMICA hosting its first-ever international passenger flight, carrying pilgrims embarking on their sacred journey to Mecca.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, and His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, who were warmly received by the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma.

Governor Uzodimma expressed his profound honour in hosting the dignitaries and emphasized the significance of selecting Imo State as the departure point for this national exercise. He highlighted that this decision reflects the unity and inclusiveness fostered within the state, reinforcing a commitment to national cohesion.

The governor also hailed the occasion as the dawn of a new era for SMICA, noting that the airport’s upgraded facilities, now meeting international aviation standards, are expected to attract more commercial international flights. This development is poised to boost connectivity and create new opportunities for the state.
Governor Uzodimma reiterated Imo State’s commitment to facilitating both Christian and Muslim pilgrimages, underscoring the state’s dedication to the spiritual development of its people and the promotion of peaceful coexistence. He extended his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his support in making this achievement possible.
During the ceremony, the governor encouraged the pilgrims to offer prayers for divine wisdom and strength for the nation’s leaders and to represent Nigeria with honour. He also expressed his deep appreciation to Vice President Shettima and the Sultan of Sokoto for their presence and support on this memorable day.
