Over 11 Million Nigerians Living With Diabetes, Experts Call for Urgent Action.

 

More than 11 million Nigerians are currently living with diabetes, with many more cases likely undiagnosed, according to Professor Zubairu Iliyasu of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. He made this known during his keynote speech at the 14th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Association of Clinical Endocrinologists of Nigeria (ACEN) held in Kano.

Themed “Endocrinology and Public Health”, the event gathered leading health professionals from across the country to address the alarming rise of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Nigeria and across Africa.

Professor Iliyasu stressed the urgent need for nationwide public awareness and lifestyle changes to tackle the growing burden of diabetes and obesity. He emphasized that early detection, education, and healthier living habits are key to prevention and control.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Musa Borodo, expressed concern over the high cost of healthcare in Nigeria, highlighting the need for policies and strategies that would reduce the impact of chronic illnesses on citizens.

ACEN President, Dr. Williams Balogun, urged the government and stakeholders to invest more in the fight against NCDs. He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advancing effective strategies for prevention and management, adding that the conference would serve as a platform to unveil innovative research and ideas to address diabetes and obesity.

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Health Commissioner Dr. Abubakar Labaran, praised the conference as both relevant and timely. He pledged the state government’s support for partnerships with medical bodies like ACEN in addressing major public health challenges. He also encouraged participants to produce practical, result-driven solutions to curb the diabetes and obesity epidemic in Nigeria.
