Let’s be clear from the start: our three years in the UK were truly special. We fell in love with its charm and made some incredible memories. However, after nearly two years of careful planning and dreaming, we finally took the plunge and embarked on a significant new chapter: moving to the land Down Under!
Our golden ticket was the Subclass 186 visa – a permanent residency pathway that offered us the incredible opportunity to live and work independently in Australia, free from any employer-related constraints. This falls under the Direct Entry Stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme, designed to attract skilled professionals in high-demand sectors across Australia. Think nurses, other vital healthcare workers, and a range of other skilled occupations.

Given that my husband is a dedicated nurse, we saw this as our chance. We proactively began our search online, specifically targeting employers who offered sponsorship through the 186 visa program.
Securing a job offer was just the first step. Before we could even begin the visa application process, my husband had to navigate the crucial registration requirements with both ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council) and AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). These are the essential gatekeepers for nurses aspiring to practice in Australia.
In my next post, I’ll be diving into the specifics of the ANMAC and AHPRA registration process – stay tuned for those valuable insights!
