On May 19, 2025, Hon. Maria Oligbi-Edeko voluntarily resigned from her position as Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, exemplifying a rare display of political integrity and loyalty to her party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Edeko’s resignation was primarily motivated by the PDP’s shift to minority status in the 24-member Assembly, following a series of defections that left the party with only six seats, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) held 18 seats . Rather than defect to the APC to retain her position and associated privileges, Edeko chose to step down,citing a commitment to justice, fairness,and equity for all constituencies .

 

Edeko’s decision stands out in a political climate where officeholders often prioritize personal gain over party loyalty. Her resignation was met with commendation from fellow lawmakers, who praised her unwavering dedication, passion for public service, and high level of integrity .

Following her resignation,Osamwonyi Atu of the APC was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker. In a gesture of respect, the Assembly moved to ensure that all entitlements due to the office of the Deputy Speaker were accorded to Edeko, acknowledging her service and principled stand.
