Nnamdi Kanu's Trial Resumes in Abuja Amidst Document Controversy

Abuja, Nigeria – The trial of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, resumed today, May 6, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, drawing significant attention. Kanu was present in court as proceedings commenced with the introduction of legal teams.

The prosecution’s lead attorney, Awomolo, introduced his team, followed by Kanu Agabi, leading the defense team of lawyers.

A notable moment occurred when Barrister Audu Nunghe, a member of Kanu’s defense team from Gombe State, publicly declared his support and commitment to the IPOB leader’s cause.

The court then proceeded with the cross-examination of the prosecution’s witness by the defense. During the questioning, the witness, described as having played a crucial role in the case, stated that he was consulted prior to the filing of the charges. However, the witness claimed to be unaware that the defendant was initially charged with 15 counts, nor was he aware that some of these charges had been previously struck out by a judge.

Similarly, the witness stated he was unaware of charges alleging Kanu incited the public to destroy public properties or directed the destruction of government properties in Lagos, despite acknowledging awareness of the latter charge at one point.

He also claimed ignorance of the trial judge striking out these particular charges.

The prosecution then called its second witness, who testified to meeting Nnamdi Kanu in Abuja at a DSS office where he was instructed to question him. The witness stated that Kanu identified himself as the leader of the proscribed IPOB and that he established the Eastern Security Network (ESN), described as an armed group.

A point of contention arose regarding a letter purportedly from the former Attorney General of the Federation. While the prosecution attempted to present the letter, Kanu’s lead counsel, Agabi, objected, stating that the letter was not included in the evidence served to the defense team. Agabi insisted that the defense should be allowed to view any document intended to be used in the proceedings. Subsequently, the prosecution withdrew the letter.

Further documents were presented by the prosecution’s Awomolo, leading to another objection from the defense. Agabi argued that the defense team had not received the majority of the documents being presented. Even the trial judge, Justice Omotosho, acknowledged not having received these documents. The defense further stated that neither a video nor the aforementioned letter from the former Attorney General had been served to them.

Consequently, the prosecution requested an adjournment until the following day. Justice Omotosho firmly instructed the prosecution that all documents they intend to rely on must be served to the defense counsel. The judge emphasized the necessity for the defense to have the opportunity to examine all evidence.

Additionally, the court noted the need for an application to be submitted for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s belongings.

Following these developments, Justice Omotosho adjourned the case until tomorrow, May 7, 2025, with the expectation that the prosecution will serve all necessary documents to the defense.
