In a move stirring significant public reaction, Niger State Governor Umar Bago has instructed security agencies to arrest individuals wearing dreadlocks in the state capital, Minna. The directive was issued during a high-level stakeholders’ security meeting held at the Government House on Tuesday.
Governor Bago emphasized his administration’s commitment to restoring order, stating that security operatives have been given “marching orders” to apprehend anyone seen with dreadlocks, shave their hair, and impose fines on them.
“We will have zero tolerance for rascality. Anybody that you find with dreadlocks—arrest, barb the hair, and fine him,” the governor declared.

The meeting was attended by senior security officials and traditional rulers, as the state explores stricter measures to address rising concerns over youth behavior and community safety.
The governor also called on parents to caution their children, warning that the government would be enforcing tougher regulations going forward.
The announcement has sparked conversations across social and traditional media, with many questioning the legality and human rights implications of the directive.
