Sunyani, Ghana – The Member of Parliament for Pru East, Hon. Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, has called for the implementation of advanced accounting systems and information technology solutions to significantly improve healthcare delivery at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
Hon. Boam, speaking alongside other members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health during a working visit to the facility, emphasized the need for strategic interventions to address pressing challenges and enhance efficiency.
“This working visit is not only to assess the needs of the hospital but to work towards solutions that will help the facility provide quality healthcare to the people of this region,” Hon. Boam stated, highlighting the committee’s commitment to identifying and resolving the hospital’s key issues.

During their engagement, the Regional Health Director underscored the necessity for a new regional hospital following the upgrade of the existing facility to a teaching hospital. Dr. Kumi suggested that an uncompleted 60-bed capacity facility in Odumasi could be repurposed and completed to serve as the new regional hospital, catering to the general healthcare needs of the population.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, Dr. Cardinal Newton, outlined several critical needs during his presentation to the Health Committee. These include the establishment of an infectious disease center to bolster the hospital’s capabilities, as well as addressing challenges such as limited space, outdated equipment and infrastructure, an aging vehicle fleet, and the lack of financial clearance to recruit essential new staff.
Hon. Sebastian Sandaare, the Member of Parliament for Daffiama/Bussie/Issa and leader of the visiting committee, expressed his satisfaction with the dedication of the doctors, nurses, general staff, and management of the hospital. He conveyed the commitment of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to the healthcare sector and assured the hospital staff that the committee would work to ensure equitable resource allocation to all healthcare facilities.
The parliamentary visit underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and services across Ghana, with a particular focus on equipping major institutions like the Sunyani Teaching Hospital with the tools and resources necessary to provide quality care.
