Higaonna’s journey into the world of karate began at the young age of 14, a pivotal moment that would shape the trajectory of his life. He initially trained in Shorei-Ryu karate under his father. However, his destiny took a decisive turn in 1955 when he was introduced to the legendary Chojun Miyagi’s Goju-Ryu by his friend Tsunetaka Shimabukuro. This encounter ignited a passion within the young Higaonna, and he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the rigorous training of this demanding style.
The essence of Goju-Ryu, meaning “hard-soft style,” deeply resonated with Higaonna’s inherent strength and unwavering discipline. He immersed himself in the fundamental principles, the intricate kata (forms), and the demanding physical conditioning that are hallmarks of the style. His dedication was such that he became a direct student of An’ichi Miyagi, Chojun Miyagi’s closest disciple and successor.
Under An’ichi Sensei’s tutelage, Higaonna absorbed the deepest secrets and nuances of Goju-Ryu, training with an intensity that became legendary.
In 1960, a significant chapter in Higaonna’s life unfolded as he moved to Tokyo to study at Takushoku University. While pursuing his academic endeavors, he simultaneously began teaching Goju-Ryu karate to university students. His exceptional skill and powerful presence quickly garnered attention, and his reputation as a formidable martial artist began to spread. It was during this period that the renowned martial arts scholar Donn Draeger, a man known for his extensive knowledge and discerning judgment, reportedly bestowed upon Higaonna the formidable moniker: “the most dangerous man in Japan in a real fight.”
This powerful statement, attributed to such a respected figure, speaks volumes about Higaonna’s exceptional fighting prowess and the effectiveness of his Goju-Ryu training.
Following his graduation from university, Higaonna Sensei continued to dedicate his life to the propagation of authentic Goju-Ryu karate.

Recognizing the growing international interest in the art, he established the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF) in 1979. This organization became the vehicle through which Higaonna could ensure that the traditional teachings of Chojun Miyagi were passed down accurately and without dilution to students around the globe.
Through the IOGKF, Higaonna Sensei has tirelessly traveled the world, conducting seminars, workshops, and gasshuku (intensive training camps). His teaching is characterized by a deep understanding of the historical and philosophical underpinnings of Goju-Ryu, coupled with a demanding yet inspiring approach to physical training. He emphasizes the importance of fundamental techniques, the precise execution of kata, and the development of internal strength and body conditioning. His dedication to preserving the traditional methods has earned him immense respect within the martial arts community worldwide.
Beyond his teaching, Higaonna Sensei has also made significant contributions to the literature of Goju-Ryu karate. He has authored several seminal works, including “Traditional Karate-do: Okinawa Goju Ryu” (1985) and “The History of Karate: Okinawan Goju Ryu” (2001). These books serve as invaluable resources for students and practitioners, offering profound insights into the history, philosophy, and technical aspects of the style. His writings reflect his deep knowledge and commitment to preserving the integrity of Goju-Ryu.
Today, at an advanced age, Morio Higaonna Sensei remains an active and influential figure in the world of karate. He continues to travel and teach, inspiring generations of practitioners with his unwavering dedication, profound knowledge, and formidable presence. He stands as a living testament to the power and efficacy of traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate, and his legacy as a master, teacher, and the “most dangerous man in Japan” endures.
His life’s work ensures that the authentic spirit and techniques of Goju-Ryu will continue to thrive for generations to come.
