Meet Bolanle Austen-Peters, the producer of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti

Bolanle Austen-Peters is the producer of the blockbuster biopic movie, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and she just finished another biopic project Bashorun Ga’a coming out in July on the NEFLIX.

 

She is the daughter of the renowned legal luminary Chief Afe Babalola.

 

She is a Law graduate from the University of Lagos and an MA from London School of Economics and Political Science and worked with her dad’s law firm in the 90s and later and with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Switzerland before delving into movie production.

Bolanle Austen-Peters is an award-winning film and theatre director, producer and executive producer dedicated to showcasing the culture, the experiences and the glamour of Nigerians through art. Her production company, Bolanle Austen-Peters Productions has produced 9 plays that have been performed on three continents.

Her plays include, Saro The Musical, Fela and the Kalakuta Queens, Motherland the Musical, Death and The King’s Horseman written by Nobel prize winner, Wole Soyinka and many more.

 

As a filmmaker she’s directed the award winning film Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and other films including The Bling Lagosians, Man of God and Collision Course and produced 93 Days.

Austen-Peters is also the Founder and Managing Director of Terra Kulture, an arts and cultural centre in Lagos, Nigeria. She is committed to using the power of storytelling to empower the creative industries, Nollywood, youth start-ups and championing women’s rights.

 

An indigene of Ekiti, born in Ibadan, Oyo State in the south-western region of Nigeria, Austen-Peters in the 1990s worked as a lawyer in Afe Babalola and Co Barristers and Solicitors. She once directed a musical ‘Man Enough’ which is a monologue in three voices; a man crying to be heard, a man yelling to be saved from a world that thinks he is ‘Superman’ and a man fearing to speak. It is a story of a man proving his worth and when he is man enough.

She is married to Adegboyega Austen-Peters, a Nigerian executive and board member.[53] They have a son and daughter, and live in Lagos, Nigeria.
