President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a transformative healthcare plan for the Greater Accra Region, centered on upgrading the Ridge Hospital into a fully-fledged teaching hospital.

This ambitious initiative aims to significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the region, addressing the growing demand for sophisticated medical services.

Speaking at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa, Mahama emphasized the importance of revolutionizing healthcare outcomes in the region.

“Under healthcare delivery in this region, we will aim to transform the quality outcomes for our healthcare. We therefore intend to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital into a full teaching hospital. That is the Ridge Hospital,” he declared.

The proposed upgrade includes the construction of the long-awaited Phase Two of the Ridge Hospital, which will increase its capacity and support its expanded role as both a teaching facility and regional hospital.

Moreover, the hospital will be affiliated with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, enabling specialist training within the region and reducing the need for patient referrals to other regions or overseas.

“The Ridge Hospital will also have an affiliation to the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. This will enhance specialist training and reduce referrals outside the region,” Mahama added.

Furthermore, the initiative includes plans to expand Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in peri-urban communities such as Bortianor, Kpone, and Shai Osudoku, ensuring that primary healthcare services are accessible and reliable in underserved areas. “Furthermore, we will expand CHPS compounds in peri-urban communities like Bortianor, Kpone, Shai Osudoku to ensure that primary healthcare is accessible and reliable,” Mahama stated.

To improve the working conditions of healthcare workers stationed at CHPS compounds, Mahama pledged to provide accommodation for all existing and newly built facilities. “For existing CHPS compounds and all new CHPS compounds we will build, we are going to include accommodation for health workers who man the CHPS compound,” he said.
