Mr. Samuel Osei Poku, a political analyst, has asserted that the sustainability of Ghana’s democracy significantly depends on how political leaders exercise the authority bestowed upon them by the electorate through voting.
During an interview on the GIFTs FM Morning Show, titled “Anopa Bosuo” chaired by Kwaku Mensah Abrampa, Mr. Samuel Osei Poku expressed concerns regarding a potential threat to the democratic system arising from a lack of trust, development, and the relentless pursuit of political power by both the NPP and NDC. He emphasized that these political parties often lose power due to their inability to fulfill the campaign promises they have made to the Ghanaian populace, then later seek re-election.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the two political parties frequently repeat similar mistakes, explaining that when political figures prioritize the acquisition of authority over essential social and economic progress, the democratic principles intended to serve the public may be undermined due to a lack of trust in the political leadership.
Mr. Samuel Osei Poku emphasized that if the electorate continues to place their trust in you based on your capabilities, yet you persist in disappointing them, they will inevitably lose trust. This loss of trust can lead to expressions of dissatisfaction, which have previously resulted in the destabilization of democracy in several African countries, such as Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, among others.
He stated that it is imperative for Ghana to introduce another political party to compete with the NDC and NPP in terms of development, as these parties have enjoyed a political monopoly for years without significantly improving the country’s fortunes. He warned that the youth might protest against the leadership of these political parties if appropriate measures are not taken.
Therefore, he urged politicians to be transparent, trustworthy, and to honor their campaign promises to ensure the country’s development and the preservation of our democracy.
