The Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Hon. Dorcas Toffey, appeared before the Appointments Committee for her vetting as Deputy Minister for Transport.
During the session, Hon. Toffey emphasized that approximately 80% of road accidents in Ghana are caused by human error. She pledged to work closely with the Minister of Transport to implement effective measures aimed at reducing such incidents if given the opportunity.
She outlined a comprehensive approach to addressing road safety issues, including public education campaigns, the establishment of a robust emergency response system, the installation of clear road signage, and the deployment of speed-detection cameras.

Hon. Toffey also stressed the need to enforce and strengthen existing traffic laws and regulations. She expressed particular concern about the role of heavy-duty trucks in road accidents, noting that they often damage roads and pose significant dangers to other road users. Citing the U.S. as an example, she explained how overloaded trucks are regulated and how similar systems should be properly implemented and enforced in Ghana
On the issue of electric buses, Hon. Toffey highlighted their importance, describing them as cost-effective and environmentally friendly. She noted that although hundreds were ordered, only ten electric buses have been received so far, with only four currently operational. The remaining six are facing electrical and charging challenges, which, according to her, the Minister has already addressed.
She further mentioned that educational campaigns on the use of electric buses have so far reached thirteen regions. If confirmed, she pledged to support the Transport Minister in extending these awareness campaigns to the remaining regions.
