John Evans Atta Mills: Ghana Remembers a Leader of Peace on 13th Anniversary

The John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage today announced a series of commemorative events to mark the 13th anniversary of the passing of His Excellency, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Ghana’s third President of the Fourth Republic.

 

A press conference held at the International Press Centre in Accra saw Alex Segbefia, the newly appointed Chief of Staff to the Vice President and Chairman of the Memorial Heritage, officially unveil the lineup of activities designed to honor the late statesman’s enduring legacy.

Thirteen years after his untimely demise, President Mills continues to be remembered as a beacon of peace, humility, and unwavering commitment to public service and Ghana’s democratic advancement.

 

Addressing the media, Alex Segbefia invoked the late President’s immortal words: “I came to serve; I have finished my time here on earth and have moved on to everlasting rest… Weep not; for I am not dead. I am alive and awake in the Lord. Ghana will not die; Ghana will live to declare the works of the Lord.”

These inspiring words serve as the guiding principle for the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage, an organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and projecting the values that defined Professor Mills: humility, discipline, integrity, excellence, and compassion.

 

Established on February 1st, 2021, the Memorial Heritage has consistently served as a vital vehicle for upholding the former President’s impactful legacy. Through strategic programs, public engagement, and annual commemorative events, the Heritage ensures that the principles Professor Mills championed continue to resonate with Ghanaians.

 

Commemoration Highlights: A Three-Day Program
The 13th-anniversary commemoration is structured around a series of significant events designed to celebrate President Mills’ life, leadership, and contributions to national development:

* Tuesday, July 22, 2025: A public lecture will delve into President Mills’ profound values and distinctive leadership style. This event is expected to feature prominent speakers and thought leaders who will reflect on his dedication to peace, democracy, and national progress.

* Thursday, July 24, 2025: On the exact date of his passing, a solemn memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony will be held at Asomdwee Park, his final resting place near Independence Square in Accra. This poignant gathering will unite family members, former colleagues, government officials, and the public in remembrance.

* Saturday, July 26, 2025: The commemoration will conclude with a hockey tournament in Accra. This event pays tribute to President Mills’ lifelong passion for sports, particularly hockey, and his commitment to youth development through athletics.

Over the past year, the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage has deepened its commitment through a range of impactful initiatives, including:

  • Various publications exploring President Mills’ life and work, including the upcoming book “Mills Around the Regions.”

  • Commissioning a documentary on the life and works of President Atta Mills.
