JAMB: Over 1.5 Million Candidates Score Below 200 in 2025
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released alarming statistics from the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), revealing that more than 1.5 million candidates scored below 200 out of the 1,955,069 who sat for the exam.

UTME 2025 Performance Breakdown
Only 420,415 candidates, just over 21% of total participants, scored 200 and above, the benchmark traditionally used by many tertiary institutions. Fewer than 1% scored above 300, highlighting a general decline in performance compared to previous years.
This performance trend raises questions about the quality of exam preparation and the effectiveness of learning methods across secondary schools in Nigeria.
Underage Candidates: Only 1% Scored Above 200
Among the 2025 UTME candidates were 40,247 underage students, allowed to participate due to what JAMB termed “exceptional abilities.” However, only 467 of these candidates (1.16%) achieved scores that would make them eligible for the next three assessment stages.
Examination Malpractice: 2,254 Candidates Under Scrutiny
JAMB also confirmed 97 cases of proven examination malpractice, with an additional 2,157 candidates under investigation for cheating-related offenses. These cases are currently being processed, and updates will be shared during a scheduled press briefing.
In addition, 71,701 candidates failed to appear for the UTME, while others who experienced biometric verification issues are being investigated and, if cleared, will be rescheduled for a fresh test session at approved CBT centers.
Pending Results for Visually Impaired and JEOG Candidates
Results for visually impaired candidates and others under the JEOG (JAMB Equal Opportunity Group) category are still being processed. JAMB has promised an official update and result-checking instructions in an upcoming press conference.
With over 1.5 million students scoring below the expected cutoff mark, this year’s UTME results may trigger a shift in admission policies, increased competition for limited slots, and renewed calls for education reform in Nigeria.
