ENUGU, NIGERIA — The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a press release vehemently rejecting the Federal Government’s attempt to introduce the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak, former aide to ex-President Jonathan, as evidence in the ongoing trial of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
According to the statement released by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, the organization views the move as a desperate attempt to divert public attention from the “disgraceful collapse” of the government’s case against Kanu.
“Rather than report on the embarrassing cross-examination of their confused witness, known as PW-BBB, who admitted under oath that no investigation report exists to support the politically motivated charges, the media is awash with irrelevant stories about the tendering of a death certificate,” the statement reads.

IPOB contends that the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak holds no evidentiary value in the context of Kanu’s trial. They accused the prosecuting counsel, Awomolo SAN, of “shocking dishonesty” for attempting to introduce the evidence after closing his examination-in-chief, labeling it an “unethical and unacceptable legal maneuver.”
The organization further clarified the timeline of events surrounding Gulak’s death and their sit-at-home observance.
“The sit-at-home observance declared by IPOB for the annual 30th May Remembrance Day in 2021 was held on Monday, 31st May 2021, not Sunday the 30th. Gulak was murdered on Sunday, a full day before the observance. This timeline alone dismantles the fabricated claim that IPOB had any involvement in his death,” the statement asserted.
IPOB likened the government’s actions to historical patterns of misinformation and ethnic persecution, drawing parallels to the 1966 coup. They called on media outlets to adhere to journalistic principles and demand the full transcript of court proceedings.
“We call on all responsible media outlets to return to the core principles of journalism—truth, accuracy, and objectivity—and to demand the full transcript of court proceedings before parroting government propaganda. The world is watching,” the statement emphasized.
Concluding the press release, IPOB reiterated their demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whom they consider a “prisoner of conscience.”
The release also contained the phrase “Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, free the prisoner of conscience Mazi Nnamdi Kanu!” along with the hashtag #FreeMaziNnamdiKanu.
