The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has launched a scathing attack on Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS), accusing the agency and its alleged media collaborators of a consistent pattern of “toxic lies” and “manufactured narratives” ahead of crucial court appearances.
In a press statement issued today by
Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, the group claimed that leading up to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s court hearing scheduled for tomorrow, May 21, 2025, the Nigerian media, particularly “government-aligned outlets like the BBC and certain Lagos and Abuja tabloids,” have reverted to an “old playbook.”

IPOB specifically highlighted what it described as the “recycling long-dead stories about Simon Ekpa,” who they characterize as a “Finland-based self-confessed content creator with no organic link to IPOB.”
The statement also accused the DSS of “resurrecting discredited security reports” to distract from what IPOB claims is the DSS’s lack of a credible case or witness. Furthermore, IPOB alleged attempts to “create the false impression of factionalism in IPOB to mislead the public and discredit our legal fight for justice.”
“IPOB has no faction and no rival leadership. The only recognised leader of IPOB is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whose unparalleled courage, sacrifice, and legitimacy are unmatched,” Comrade Powerful asserted. He distanced Simon Ekpa from IPOB’s leadership and command structure, referring to him as a “YouTube activist whose courtroom cowardice in Finland betrays his lack of commitment.”
The group dismissed what it called the “desperate attempt by DSS and their compromised media allies to forge a link between IPOB’s internal matters and Simon Ekpa’s self-serving theatrics,” predicting its failure, akin to past “psychological operations” since 2015.
IPOB reiterated its focus on the “legal battle for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” whose “extraordinary rendition remains a stain on Nigeria’s international image and legal system.”
As the May 21st court date looms, IPOB urged the “global community and the diplomatic corps to expect a flurry of fake news and planted reports meant to muddy the waters.” The group suggested that the Nigerian state is aware its witness will be exposed under cross-examination and is seeking a “media smokescreen to deflect public attention.”
Concluding their statement, IPOB delivered a direct message to the DSS and its “media hirelings”: “we are not distracted. You cannot bury the truth with lies. You cannot break IPOB with propaganda. And you will never succeed in rewriting history.”
The press release ended with a defiant note: “Let the world judge us not by your lies, but by our resilience.”
