House of Representatives Rejects Bill on Rotational Presidency

In a major development at the National Assembly, the House of Representatives on Tuesday voted down a proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish a rotational presidency among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The bill aimed to mandate that the offices of the President and Vice President rotate among regions to promote inclusivity and balanced representation.

The constitutional amendment bill was designed to institutionalize regional equity by rotating executive leadership across the North-Central, North-East, North-West, South-East, South-South, and South-West zones. Supporters argued that it would help address long-standing political imbalances and foster national unity.

However, a majority of lawmakers voiced strong opposition, warning that such a move could set a dangerous precedent and possibly deepen regional divides rather than heal them.

The rotational presidency bill was one of seven constitutional amendment proposals slated for debate on Tuesday. In an effort to streamline discussions, the House had earlier suspended its standing rules to allow simultaneous debates on all seven bills, giving lawmakers the freedom to engage with any of their choice.

Despite this, the rotational presidency bill garnered the most attention and sparked intense debate. Ultimately, all seven bills, including the rotational leadership proposal, were rejected during the plenary session.

While the bills failed to pass in their current form, the House resolved to revisit them individually on Wednesday. Lawmakers agreed that further deliberation on each bill’s specific merits would provide a more targeted and constructive path forward.

The rejection of the rotational presidency bill highlights ongoing complexities in Nigeria’s political discourse, especially regarding equitable representation. While the idea of rotation appeals to proponents of national unity, the legislative pushback underscores the sensitivity of constitutional changes tied to ethnicity and regional balance.
