Yesterday, July 11, 2025, in observance of World Population Day, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Ntekuni delivered a compelling speech emphasizing global and continental demographic shifts. The day, designated by the United Nations, serves to acknowledge and reflect upon the world’s population dynamics.
Hon. Ntekuni commenced his address by tracing the origins of World Population Day, noting its establishment after the global population reached approximately 5 billion in 1987. He highlighted the remarkable increase since then, with the current world population standing at 8.2 billion.

Projections indicate this figure is likely to climb to 8.8 billion by the close of 2025.
Shifting focus to Africa, Hon. Ntekuni underscored the continent’s significant contribution to the global population. He stated that Africa is home to approximately 1.4 billion people, accounting for a substantial 19% of the world’s total. Within this, Ghanaians represent about 0.45% of Africa’s population.
