Governor Abdulrahman’s Big-For-Nothing Projects and where is People’s welfare?
by Abd-Lateef Olalekan Odo
The concept of development extends far beyond the confines of road construction and teacher recruitment. In today’s enlightened era, citizens are no longer easily swayed by superficial achievements. Knowledge and exposure have empowered individuals to discern reality, understand the intricacies of governance, and demand more from their leaders.

The primary goal of every government is to drive growth and development while prioritizing citizens’ welfare and living standards. Regrettably, many governors focus solely on infrastructure development even without needs assessment, neglecting the well-being of their people. This skewed approach raises questions about the true meaning and purpose of development.
My research into the definition of development and growth was prompted by this governor’s approach. According to the Oxford dictionary, development refers to the process of growth, progress, or improvement in various aspects of life. This multifaceted concept encompasses:
Economic Development. An increase in productivity, income, and living standards. Unfortunately, this administration has witnessed a concerning decline in productivity, coupled with a worsening living standard for workers. The take-home pay of civil servants can hardly sustain an individual for a month, let alone an entire family.
Social Development. Improvement in education, healthcare, and social welfare. While some level of achievements have been recorded in this sector, they pale in comparison to the substantial allocations received from the central government, loans, and internal generated revenue(IGR). One wonders what these funds are truly being utilized for.
Human Development. Enhancement of individual capabilities, skills, and well-being. Let me quote a servant who is my friend “I can attest that this government has not prioritized human development.” A friend who is a civil servant was telling me last week that He hasn’t received any training in the last five years, leaving him to wonder if the government genuinely cares about the well-being of its employees.
Infrastructure Development. Construction and improvement of roads, bridges, buildings, and other physical infrastructure. Although this government has made notable progress in physical projects, it hasn’t translated into meaningful development. New buildings and resurfaced roads are mere facades when the people are struggling to survive.
Development’s ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life, reduce poverty, and promote sustainability. Has this administration achieved these objectives?
The poverty level appears to be on the rise, and the quality of life remains dismal. Based on the true meaning of development, this government’s performance would likely score less than 40%. Its priorities seem skewed toward superficial projects, neglecting the broader aspects of development that truly matter to citizens.
In conclusion, as we reflect on the true meaning and purpose of development, it becomes clear that this administration’s priorities are misaligned with the needs of its people. A house built on shaky foundations will not stand the test of time. Similarly, a government that neglects the welfare of its citizens and ignores the broader aspects of development risks crumbling under the weight of its own shortcomings.
As the saying goes, “A tree is known by its fruit.” Let us hope that our leaders will prioritize meaningful development that bears fruit for all citizens, improving their quality of life and promoting sustainability.
