Ilorin, Kwara State – Under the banner of “Salute to Immutable Truth,” the Kwara State Government, spearheaded by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, through initiatives highlighted by Rafiu Ajakaye, has presented a compelling scorecard of achievements across various sectors from 2019 to 2025. This comprehensive review reveals significant strides in civil service reform, infrastructure development, healthcare, economic growth, environmental stewardship, sports, and social inclusion.

 

Civil Service Revitalization: A Foundation for Progress

One of the core areas of focus has been the civil service. The administration boasts 1,425 new hires, 11,189 promotions, and 1,094 career conversions, indicating a robust effort to strengthen the state’s workforce. Furthermore, operational vehicles for the civil service have increased from zero in 2019 to over 12, complemented by 6 new vehicles specifically for basic school inspections, signalling a commitment to improved oversight and efficiency.

 

Soaring Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)

A key indicator of economic health, Kwara’s Internally Generated Revenue has seen a remarkable surge. From N30.6 billion in 2019, the IGR has more than doubled to N69.19 billion by 2024, demonstrating enhanced financial discipline and economic expansion within the state.

 

Transforming Water Infrastructure

Access to potable water has been a critical focus. The number of standpipes has dramatically increased from 1,531 in 2019 to 2,945 in 2025, marking a 92.36% increase, with Abdulrazaq’s administration directly responsible for building 1,414 of these. Additionally, 28 waterworks have been rehabilitated and 3 new ones constructed, significantly improving water supply across the state.

Boosting Healthcare Access and Quality

In healthcare, the administration has made substantial progress, enrolling 91,367 people in health insurance – a significant leap from zero in 2019. Over 47 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) and secondary hospitals have been rehabilitated, and various health programmes have been linked to development partners, enhancing the quality and reach of healthcare services.

 

Environmental Stewardship for a Greener Kwara

Environmental sustainability has also been a priority, with over 160,000 trees planted. The “Flower Garden Initiative” promotes both recreational and ecological benefits, alongside broader urban renewal efforts aimed at sustainable living.

 

Roads Development: Connecting Kwara

Infrastructure development, particularly roads, has seen significant investment. Over 300 roads have been developed between 2019 and 2025. Notably, 294 km of roads were constructed via the Tax Credit Scheme, connecting critical areas like Kosubosu-Kaiama-Bode Saadu and Bacita-Shonga-Lafiagi. An additional 67 km of roads were developed in Kwara South, linking communities such as Ajase-Ipo to Okeiya and Arandun-Esie-Oro Road.

 

Inclusion and Gender Equity: A Model for Governance

Kwara State has championed inclusion and gender equity under Governor Abdulrazaq. There’s a strong emphasis on the inclusion of youth and people with disabilities. A pioneering Gender Composition Law mandates a 35% minimum for all appointments, with an impressive 56.25% of the current cabinet comprising women, setting a benchmark for gender balance in governance.

Media and Press Freedom Evolution

The media landscape in Kwara has also seen positive changes. Radio Kwara has been revived, and new stations like Kakakin FM and Nootia FM have been launched. The NUJ Centre has been saved, and importantly, the administration reports “zero journalist harassment,” fostering an environment of “unfettered freedom for responsible expression.”

 

Sports Renaissance: Building Future Champions

The sports sector has received a significant boost, marked by the renovation of an indoor sports hall (the first time since 1976), the construction of an 8-wing squash court, and a new table tennis arena. The recent victory of Kwara United in the 2025 Cup has been dedicated to Yusuf Salami, underscoring the renewed focus on sports development.

 

Flagship Infrastructure Projects: Laying the Groundwork for Growth

Several key infrastructure projects are defining the state’s developmental trajectory. These include the Innovation Hub, renovation of the University of Education, remodeled Kwara Hotel, Sugar Factory Film Studio, Visual Arts Centre, Garment Factory, Industrial Park, Shea Butter Factories, and a Smart City spanning 20,000 hectares. These projects are poised to stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life for Kwarans.
