Government Seeks Stakeholder Input to End Persistent Power Outages

ACCRA, GHANA – May 15, 2025 – In a significant move aimed at tackling Ghana’s persistent power sector challenges, the government has initiated a high-level dialogue with key industry stakeholders. The objective is to forge a sustainable path forward that will bring an end to the country’s long-standing electricity supply issues.

 

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor co-chaired a crucial meeting with representatives from major entities in the power sector.

Attendees included top officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the Volta River Authority (VRA), and the Energy Commission.

The comprehensive discussions focused intensely on identifying effective, long-term solutions to a range of deeply entrenched problems plaguing the sector. These critical issues include substantial legacy debts, ongoing concerns surrounding electricity tariffs, pervasive operational inefficiencies across the value chain, and the burden of high-cost power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Forson acknowledged the severe financial strain currently confronting the power sector.

However, he emphasized that the primary goal of the meeting was not merely to lament the challenges but to pinpoint actionable steps that would ensure stability and sustainability.

 

“Our conversation centred on the urgent need for effective and sustainable solutions to strengthen Ghana’s power sector,” Dr. Forson stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to finding lasting remedies.

 

The meeting concluded with a unified commitment from all participating parties. Stakeholders expressed their collective resolve to support ongoing reforms being implemented under the broader Energy Sector Recovery Programme.
