Ghana Gold Board Extends License Deadline Amidst Major Export Policy Shift

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has announced a one-month extension for the transition to its new gold trading license regime, moving the deadline from May 21, 2025, to June 21, 2025. This decision comes after numerous petitions from various stakeholders in the gold sector.

According to a press statement released on May 22, 2025, individuals holding licenses issued by the defunct Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) or the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources can continue to purchase and deal in gold using these licenses until the new June 21 deadline.

However, the GoldBod emphasized that after June 21, 2025, only holders of a new GoldBod license will be permitted to purchase, sell, or deal in gold within Ghana. Any use of the old PMMC or Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources licenses beyond this date will be considered a punishable offense under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (ACT 1140). While applications for GoldBod licenses will remain open beyond the new deadline, trading without the new license will be prohibited.

In a significant policy shift, the GoldBod also announced that effective immediately, May 22, 2025, the export function of all licenses previously issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has ceased to be valid. This means that no entity other than GoldBod itself can now export small-scale gold from Ghana.

The GoldBod is encouraging all persons interested in trading or dealing in gold in Ghana to apply for a license through their official website, www.goldbod.gov.gh.

“The GoldBod counts on the cooperation of all stakeholders and the general public as we work to optimize national benefits from Ghanaโ€™s gold resources in line with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama,” stated Prince Kwame Minkah, Media Relations Officer for the GoldBod.

This move aims to centralize and streamline the gold trade, ensuring greater national benefit from Ghana’s rich gold resources.
