Fear grips Aba over consistent RRS abuse of her human rights
Disturbing reports are surfacing from Aba, Abia State, where residents allege ongoing abuse and extortion by members of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) stationed in Aba North. Multiple accounts from victims suggest a troubling pattern of unlawful arrests, detention without due process, and violent intimidation tactics used to extort large sums of money.

One recent victim, who spoke out after his release on Sunday, May 18, described a chilling encounter. According to him, he was arbitrarily arrested and accused of filming the squad’s activities. He was denied access to legal counsel and kept incommunicado, cut off from both family and representation.
“I was picked up for allegedly recording their operations,” he recounted. “They were stopping bikers, seizing phones from bystanders, and demanding ₦50,000. If you resist, they take you to the station and increase the demand to ₦300,000 or more.”
The victim claimed the officers boasted of direct ties to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), asserting that even the Abia State Commissioner of Police had no authority over them.
“I was assaulted for refusing to unlock my phone. Officer Dan, the squad’s 2YC, beat me in his office,” he said. “He told me to report to human rights groups, insisting nothing would come of it. He said, ‘This isn’t Lagos. I can kill you and no one will know.’ And for hours, no one did—my family only found out where I was because witnesses raised the alarm.”
Held at the RRS base inside the Aba North Local Government Secretariat, the victim said he was denied water, phone access, and legal aid. Officer Dan allegedly threatened to obtain a court order to unlock and wipe his phone’s contents. No statement was taken, and no official profiling was done during the detention.
Perhaps most alarming, he claimed that over 25 other young men were being held in similar conditions—some for weeks or even months—without trial, access to lawyers, or notification to family members. This revelation has raised serious concerns that many of the individuals reported missing in the region may in fact be unlawfully detained.
“Several detainees told me they were asked to pay between ₦30,000 and ₦1.5 million to secure their release. If you can’t pay, they brand you a ‘Yahoo boy,’” he added.
These shocking testimonies point to a systemic abuse of power by the RRS in Aba North, and highlight an urgent need for investigation and accountability.
