Lagos, Nigeria – May 3, 2025 – The political aspirations of Samad Ogunbo, a leading contender for the chairmanship of Eti-Osa East Local Government Area, have been abruptly halted following his disqualification from the race by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The decision comes amidst serious allegations that Ogunbo was simultaneously drawing salaries from two different Lagos State government entities.
According to documents reportedly seen by SaharaReporters, the disqualification was triggered by a formal petition outlining Ogunbo’s alleged dual employment. The accusations center on his simultaneous roles as an employee of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and as “Supervisor on Health” at the Eti-Osa Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The timeline of events suggests that Ogunbo was appointed as “Supervisor for Health” at the Eti-Osa LCDA in April 2022. However, a letter obtained from SUBEB in response to an inquiry paints a picture of surprise and potential violation of state regulations.

In the letter, signed by Education Secretary S.A. Soetan, SUBEB confirmed Ogunbo’s employment with the Eti-Osa Local Government Education Authority and their presence on the SUBEB payroll.
“Moreover, this office is shocked to know that the said officers are currently on the nominal payroll of your organisation without prior notification of occupying any political appointment offices,” the SUBEB letter stated, referring to both Ogunbo and another individual.
Sources speaking on condition of anonymity alleged that Ogunbo’s simultaneous receipt of salaries from both the state government (as a civil servant through SUBEB) and the local government (as a political appointee) constitutes a clear breach of Lagos State law, which reportedly prohibits government employees from holding concurrent appointments at the local government level.
When contacted by SaharaReporters for his reaction to the allegations and subsequent disqualification, Ogunbo declined to provide detailed comments, stating, “The case is with the police. I am in a meeting now.”
This development throws the Eti-Osa East chairmanship race into uncertainty. Ogunbo was considered a strong contender, and his sudden disqualification is likely to reshape the political dynamics in the lead-up to the elections. The APC is yet to issue an official statement beyond the reported disqualification, leaving room for speculation and further developments in this unfolding saga.
The focus will now shift to how the party intends to proceed with the selection of a new candidate and the potential ramifications for the upcoming polls.
