Edo PDP Condemns Violence in Benin City, Blames “Unchecked Actions” of Law Enforcement

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent escalation of violence in Benin City, attributing the unrest to what it describes as “unchecked actions” of law enforcement officers.

In a press statement released today, May 22, 2025, the PDP called for responsive leadership and an immediate investigation into the incidents that have gripped the state capital.

According to the PDP, the past 48 hours have seen “unfortunate incidents” where an altercation between some youths and law enforcement officers devolved into widespread violence. The party claims reports indicate the unrest was sparked by allegations of police extortion, brutality, and indiscriminate arrests.

The statement, signed by Chris Osa Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary for the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, highlights a “palpable tension” that has reportedly pervaded Benin City for weeks. This tension, the PDP asserts, stems from what is perceived as the unbridled actions of law enforcement agencies operating under the guise of combating cultism and cybercrime.

The party suggests that a “carte blanche” given to these agencies has led to “overreach, abuse of power, and gross violations of citizens’ rights.”

While unequivocally condemning the attack on law enforcement officers, which it states “undermines public order and the rule of law,” the PDP equally held the state government accountable. The party accused the government of creating an environment that has “bred fear, mistrust, and unrest among our people.”

“Violence, from any quarter, is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of a peaceful and law-abiding society that Edo State is known for,” the statement read.

The Edo PDP urged for a leadership that prioritizes the “safety, dignity, and rights of all her people,” and criticized directives to security agencies that it believes “only served to exacerbate tensions and inflame passions, rather than calm the situation.”

The party emphasized that true leadership involves “accountability, restraint, and providing a steady hand in times of crisis,” rather than “issuing threats from behind podiums or playing politics with the lives and properties of citizens.” The PDP called on the government to engage proactively with stakeholders, including community leaders, civil society, and security agencies, to de-escalate the situation and rebuild trust between the populace and security forces.

Concluding its statement, the Edo PDP reiterated its commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of all citizens, demanding an immediate and thorough investigation into the recent incidents.
