Benin City, Nigeria – The Edo State Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vehemently criticized former state chairman, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, asserting that he lacks the moral authority to speak for the party. In a strongly worded press statement issued today, the caretaker committee accused Aziegbemi of “ineptitude and divisive leadership” that led to the party’s recent crisis.

The committee labeled a recent gathering convened by Aziegbemi as “desperate and self-serving,” highlighting his alleged role in the defection of PDP House of Assembly members to the All Progressives Congress (APC). “His disgraceful role in the recent defection of PDP House of Assembly members to the APC can not be forgotten or forgiven,” the statement read.

“The same men he now throws under the bus are victims of his high-handedness, poor coordination, and arrogant disdain for inclusivity. His leadership failure led to a mass exodus, yet he chose to deflect blame through malicious name-calling and mudslinging. This is not leadership; it is cowardice masquerading as conviction.”

Furthermore, the caretaker committee accused Aziegbemi of betraying the Southern presidential agreement and sabotaging the 2021 Asaba Accord. The statement also pointed out his current criticism of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, describing it as a display of “shamelessness,” considering Okowa’s past support for Aziegbemi.

The Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, led by Barr. Nosa Ogieva-Okunbor, declared that Aziegbemi no longer holds any official position within the party and that his statements should be disregarded as “the delusions of a failed political actor.” The committee emphasized that the National Working Committee has appointed a new caretaker team with the mission to “rebuild, reunite, and reposition the PDP in Edo back to its glorious roots.”

The statement, signed by Publicity Secretary Bob-Manuel Umoru, called on “all true patriots, loyal party members, and Edo people who believe in progress and justice to rally” with the caretaker committee in their efforts to restore the party. “Ours is a call to plough and nurture, not plunder and fracture,” Umoru stated.

“Together, we will restore our house, reawaken our people’s hope, and reclaim our place as the pride of Edo and the heartbeat of Nigeria’s opposition politics.”
