Dr. Vs (Dr): Differences between Academic Degrees

People need to start understanding the difference between Dr and (Dr).

Any “Dr” written without brackets refers to an academic doctorate someone who has spent years studying, researching, and writing in a university or academic institution before earning the title. This “Dr” is rooted in education and carries weight and honor.

However, when you see “(Dr)” with brackets this is usually used as a title of honor or recognition, not necessarily backed by a PhD. For example, some leaders, traditional rulers, or respected elders are called “(Dr)” as a form of tribute or respect, not because they’ve gone through the rigorous process of earning a doctoral degree.

It is unfortunate how some people use the title “Dr” without truly earning it. If a person hasn’t gone through the rigorous process of obtaining a PhD, they should not be accepting or using the title “Dr” as if they actually hold it. Doing so diminishes the value of education and disrespects the effort scholars put into achieving their doctoral degrees.

Someone who spent years earning a Master’s degree, then proceeded to a PhD program, conducted thorough research, wrote a comprehensive thesis, defended it successfully, and was officially awarded a Doctorate by a university such a person deserves to be called “Dr” legally and respectfully.

However, someone who was simply given “(Dr)” as an honorary title, whether due to a political position, leadership role, or societal status, should not go around using the title without clarifying that it is honorary. If they do so without explanation, they mislead the public and undermine the integrity of academic achievements.

Based on these reasons, education should be treated with great respect and seriousness. Education is not a joke, and it has no substitute it requires dedication, patience, and perseverance. Therefore, addressing someone as “Dr” without them fulfilling the required academic qualifications is an act of injustice and a betrayal of the value of education and those who pursue it with sincerity.
