Disturbing Discovery at Old Artisan Market Raises Food Safety Concerns

A shocking account from a recent visitor to the Old Artisan market has cast a dark shadow over food safety practices, particularly concerning the sale of poultry. The anonymous individual, who visited the market to have a Guinea fowl roasted, described a disturbing encounter that has left them vowing to be more cautious about their food choices.

According to the witness, as they were about to park their car, they observed two elderly women handling what appeared to be a large quantity of deceased chickens. Upon closer inspection, the grim reality became apparent: the chickens were in an advanced state of decomposition, with maggots visible. The witness overheard one of the women remarking, “I go buy all for 7k,” referring to what was estimated to be over 20 decaying birds. The foul odor, described as penetrating, filled the air around the scene.

Deeply disturbed by the sight, the individual later recounted their experience to a poultry slaughterer within the market. The response they received was equally unsettling. The slaughterer reportedly stated, “Where you think most of these fried chicken wey dem dey sell for roadside dey come from?” He went on to explain that vendors purchase such decayed chickens, fry them, and the process masks the spoilage, making it impossible for consumers to discern the true condition of the meat.

The witness expressed profound shock, stating they were aware that some individuals purchased deceased chickens, but had previously believed these were birds that had died instantly, not those that were actively rotten and infested.

The revelation has significantly impacted the individual, who confirmed, “God knows this confirmed why I won’t eat chicken anyhow again. What I saw ruined my whole day.” They questioned the ethics behind such practices, lamenting, “Why are people this wicked to themselves just because of money?”

This alarming account serves as a stark warning to the public to exercise extreme caution regarding the source and preparation of their food, particularly when purchasing from informal vendors. Consumers are urged to prioritize hygiene and freshness to avoid potential health risks.
