The air at the NYSC Kano State Orientation Camp in Kusala-Dam, Karaye Local Government Area, was charged with the energy of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream One corps members. Amidst the drills and introductions, a strong and vital message resonated, delivered by the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu.
His address focused on two critical areas crucial for the well-being and safety of these young Nigerians embarking on their service year: the avoidance of drug abuse and the importance of adhering to travel regulations.
General Nafiu didn’t mince words when it came to the dangers of hard drugs and other dangerous stimulants. He painted a clear picture of the regret that inevitably follows actions taken under their influence. Instead, he passionately encouraged the corps members to channel their energies into building successful futures for themselves, a future that undoubtedly holds immense potential for each and every one of them.

His message served as a timely reminder that true strength lies in a clear mind and a focused ambition.
Beyond personal well-being, the Director General also addressed the critical matter of safety during their service year. He implored the corps members to strictly adhere to NYSC guidelines regarding travel, emphasizing the absolute necessity of obtaining official approval before embarking on any journey.
Furthermore, he issued a strong warning against night travel, highlighting the inherent risks and potential dangers associated with it. This counsel underscores the NYSC’s commitment to the safety and security of its members throughout their service.
However, the DG’s address wasn’t just about warnings. He also instilled a sense of purpose and responsibility, encouraging the young participants to actively contribute their quota to national development and foster national integration. He emphasized that their actions, no matter how small they may seem, can have a positive impact on the communities they will serve and the nation as a whole.
Adding a positive note to the proceedings, the NYSC Kano State Coordinator, Hajiya Halima Abdulkarim Abubakar, presented a heartwarming report to General Nafiu. She proudly announced that the camp is currently hosting 1,987 corps members – 1,110 females and 887 males – representing the diverse tapestry of all 36 states of the Federation, including the FCT. More impressively, she highlighted their exemplary conduct, noting their “honesty, dedication, commitment to duty, high sense of responsibility and loyalty to the Scheme.”
This positive feedback speaks volumes about the caliber of young individuals ready to contribute to Nigeria.
General Nafiu’s address serves as a crucial guidepost for these young men and women as they begin this significant chapter of their lives. By heeding his wise counsel on avoiding harmful substances and adhering to safety protocols, and by embracing the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the nation, these corps members are setting themselves up for a successful and impactful service year.
The positive report from the Kano State Coordinator further reinforces the hope and potential that this new batch embodies. Here’s to a productive and safe service year for the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream One!
