The CDS then informed the esteemed Generals that, in line with Ghana Armed Forces regulations and to facilitate effective command and control, many of them present would be honorably released from their service.
Speaking on behalf of the assembled Generals, the Commandant of the National College of Defence Studies, Major General Irvine Aryeetey, addressed the ongoing changes within the Military High Command Structure. He emphasized that such transitions are not unprecedented but rather a consistent aspect of the Ghana Armed Forces’ history.
Major General Aryeetey highlighted the traditional practice of new cohorts succeeding their predecessors, citing previous handovers. He recalled the transition from then-CDS Lieutenant General OB Akwa (Intake 18) to Vice Admiral S Amoama (Intake 23), a difference of five intakes. He also pointed to the subsequent handover from Vice Admiral S Amoama (Intake 23) to General T Oppong-Peprah (Intake 26), a gap of three intakes.
He concluded that the current change in command between the immediate past CDS, General T Oppong-Peprah, and the incumbent CDS, Major General W Agyapong, representing a four-intake difference, aligns with established military tradition.
Major General Aryeetey expressed the Generals’ gratitude to the CDS for the unique gesture of inviting and formally honoring them with this meeting.
The valedictory meeting concluded with a luncheon hosted by the CDS at his office, where he extended his best wishes to the departing Generals for their future endeavors.
Also in attendance at the significant event were the various Service Chiefs and the Chief of Staff, General Headquarters.
