Bishop T.D. Jakes Appoints Sarah and Touré Roberts as Church leaders

 

In a historic moment for one of the world’s largest megachurches, Bishop T.D. Jakes has officially announced that he is stepping down as Senior Pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas. After 30 impactful years of leadership, he is passing the mantle to his daughter, Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Pastor Touré Roberts.

During an emotional Sunday service, Bishop Jakes, accompanied by his wife Serita Jakes, named Sarah and Touré as the new Senior Pastors of The Potter’s House. The leadership transition will take effect beginning July 2025, while Bishop Jakes will continue to serve on the church’s Board of Directors.

 

A Legacy of Leadership and Transition

 

Fighting back tears, Sarah Jakes Roberts expressed deep gratitude during the announcement, embracing her father and sharing her honor in taking on the new role.

 

“As your pastor-elect, co-senior pastor-elect, I’m grateful, I’m honored as your daughter,” she said emotionally.

 

This transition comes after Bishop Jakes suffered a heart attack in November 2024 during a morning service, an event that sparked questions about his ability to continue active ministry.

 

“I cannot afford, especially after November, to risk something happening to me, and you be sheep without a shepherd,” Jakes explained during Sunday’s service.

 

 

A Letter to the Congregation

 

Following the announcement, the Jakes family released an official letter to The Potter’s House congregation and the broader public:

 

“Today we shared with the world our long-held plans of purposeful evolution for The Potter’s House and our global church family.

 

Preparing for this announcement over the past several years has allowed us as a family and a global church family to carefully balance the needs of our community worldwide and the pace at which we performed each step of our plan.

 

When members of our family moved from LA to Dallas, it was to be more active in the evolution of this growing ministry. In 2022, a handshake between generations took place as we said farewell to Woman, Thou Art Loosed and hello to Woman Evolve. And when we installed our two new assistant pastors in 2023, we continued to forge ahead in the vision we set long ago.

 

Today marks the continuation of our willingness to evolve as a church and step into broader roles to make certain we continue to meet the needs of this sensitive moment in our collective history.”
