Akpabio Leads Nigerian Delegation to Pope Francis’ Funeral at the Vatican

 

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is leading a five-member Nigerian delegation to the Vatican City for the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

The delegation, appointed by President Bola Tinubu, arrived in Vatican City ahead of the burial rites scheduled for today. On Friday, Akpabio visited St. Peter’s Basilica, paying tribute to the late pontiff on behalf of President Tinubu and the people of Nigeria. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Akpabio shared photos from the ceremony, emphasizing Nigeria’s deep respect for Pope Francis’ legacy.

According to Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian team will also formally present a condolence letter to the Acting Head of the Vatican.

 

Earlier, President Tinubu expressed his sorrow at the Pope’s passing, describing him as “a humble servant of God, a tireless champion of the poor, and a guiding light for millions around the world.” He noted that Pope Francis’ death shortly after Easter was “a sacred return to his Maker at a time of renewed global hope.”

Pope Francis, who had recently been discharged from hospital after battling double pneumonia, passed away peacefully at his Santa Marta residence. His official death certificate cites a combination of health complications including stroke, hypertension, multiple bronchiectasis, and Type 2 diabetes.

 

As global leaders gather to honor his profound legacy, Nigeria stands in solidarity with millions worldwide, paying their final respects to a life dedicated to service, compassion, and faith.
