Lagos, Nigeria – April 26, 2025 – A devastating accident occurred in the Agege area of Lagos State around 11:00 AM on Saturday when a fully loaded truck careened off a bridge and landed directly onto two commercial buses stationed below. The impact of the fall resulted in extensive damage to both passenger vehicles.
Eyewitness accounts indicate a scene of chaos and destruction in the vicinity of the Old Abeokuta Road, where the Pen Cinema Bridge is located. Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority Response Unit (LRU), swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the aftermath.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reported that the driver of the ill-fated truck sustained severe injuries as a direct consequence of the accident.
Providing further details, Mr. Bakare-Oki stated that the accident involved a heavy-duty truck bearing the registration number GGE 624 YJ and two Volkswagen commercial buses, both adorned with their characteristic yellow paint.
Preliminary investigations conducted by LASTMA officials suggest that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle while navigating the elevated section of the Pen Cinema Bridge. This loss of control led to the catastrophic plunge of the truck from the bridge deck onto the two buses that were situated underneath, likely either picking up or dropping off passengers.

“LASTMA Officers successfully extricated the severely injured driver from the wreckage and immediately handed him over to officers of the Elere Police Division,” Mr. Bakare-Oki explained. “He was subsequently conveyed to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent medical intervention due to grievous fractures sustained on both hands.”
In the immediate aftermath, LASTMA personnel prioritized the safety of other road users and worked to prevent any secondary incidents. They promptly secured the accident site by establishing a cordon around the affected area and implementing traffic diversions to manage the flow of vehicles.
Following the initial rescue efforts and safety measures, operatives from the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) commenced the crucial task of clearing the substantial wreckage. Their efforts were successful in removing the mangled remains of the truck and the two buses, thereby allowing for the eventual restoration of traffic flow along this busy axis of Agege.
In light of this tragic event, the General Manager of LASTMA issued a strong appeal to all motorists, with a particular emphasis on truck operators, to exercise the utmost caution and vigilance while driving, especially as Lagos State and the surrounding region brace for the increasing rainfall associated with the onset of the rainy season.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on Lagos roads and the critical need for responsible driving practices, particularly for large and heavy vehicles navigating flyovers and bridges.
Authorities are expected to conduct a more thorough investigation into the precise cause of the accident. As of the time of this report, there was no immediate confirmation of any fatalities among potential passengers of the commercial buses, although the extent of injuries sustained by anyone in the buses remains unclear.
