The dark underbelly of human trafficking has once again been exposed in Nigeria, leaving a trail of unimaginable horror and shattered innocence. Yesterday, operatives of the Amotekun Corps in Ogun State made a disturbing discovery, dismantling a sex trafficking syndicate that preyed on vulnerable young girls, forcing them into sexual servitude for as little as ₦1,000 per session.
Among the victims rescued was a 14-year-old girl, a JSS3 student, whose heartbreaking testimony painted a grim picture of her daily nightmare. She revealed the horrifying scale of her exploitation, stating that she was forced to sleep with between 12 and 20 men every single day for a pittance.
Her journey into this living hell began with a false promise. Lured from her home in Akwa Ibom State, she was told she would be working as a sales girl. Instead, upon arrival, she was subjected to a brutal regime of control and abuse. Her hair was forcibly cut by the alleged “boss lady,” a chilling act accompanied by a threat that her hair would be used to kill her if she dared to escape.
Since then, this young girl has been trapped, forced into prostitution under the control of Mrs. Edem Joy. Mrs. Edem, in turn, claimed to be working for a 60-year-old woman identified as Mrs. Okutoro Yemisi, suggesting a larger network of exploitation.
The syndicate’smodus operandi involved luring girls primarily from Akwa Ibom, but also from Calabar and Delta States. These vulnerable young women were subjected to terrifying oaths, forced to swear on their blood, hair, or even the Bible never to confess their ordeal or attempt to flee.
To ensure their compliance, the victims were allegedly drugged and subjected to the use of charms. They were then dispatched to various hotels, with the false promise of freedom after a year and a meager settlement of a phone and a box of clothes.
Adding a disturbing layer to this horrific trade, the girls revealed that their “boss” meticulously collected the tissues used by the men after each sexual encounter, allegedly for ritualistic purposes.
The financial exploitation was stark. While the syndicate charged customers between ₦1,000 and ₦5,000 per session, all the proceeds were reportedly handed over to Mrs. Edem. Tragically, the youngest victim discovered in this operation was a mere 12 years old.
The breakthrough came following an anonymous tip received by authorities on February 8th. This crucial information led Amotekun operatives to the Railway Line Hotel, located at Old Bank Bus Stop in Ifo town, where the arrests were made.
During the operation, law enforcement officials reportedly recovered lubricant, drugs, cash, and charms, further highlighting the criminal nature of the syndicate’s activities.
This shocking incident serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of human trafficking and the urgent need for increased vigilance and stronger protective measures for vulnerable children. The bravery of the anonymous tipster and the swift action of Amotekun are commendable, but the fight against this heinous crime is far from over. Justice must be served for these young victims, and concerted efforts are needed to dismantle these criminal networks and prevent further
exploitation.
